Bert Thomas
Wayne Peachey Memorial Award
Bert is requested by many heavy industrial clients in the Gladstone region. He is known as an authority in all types of High and Low Energy commissioning. Bert's knowledge around switchgear repair and maintenance is beyond comparison within the region and this is also demonstrated by his standing as an authority figure within the Nilsen business nationally. He is called upon to assist with the development of testing and commissioning plans that form the basis of our quality systems. These testing regimes are then rolled out to our sister companies nationally. Bert is a peer mentor to our Engineering Services technicians within Nilsen Qld.
A mantra of "Do it Right the First Time" is something that is commonly thrown around in industry. Rarely is it adopted. The fact that Bert has continued return customers demonstrates this is his creed. Bert is always approachable and the pride he displays when given the opportunity to mentor both apprentices and trades people is the most pleasing aspect of being his direct line manager. Bert continually demonstrates the patience to guide, council, advice and mentor all who work with him. His passion for his trade makes his colleagues better. The capacity to lift those in high pressure environments is a trait rarely seen.
Bert's list of major site commissioning reads like a who's who of local Gladstone Industry;
GPC - High Energy Maintenance, Installation and Pre Commissioning
ICI Yarwun (Orica) - High Energy Maintenance, Installation and Commissioning Cement Australia - High Energy Maintenance, Commissioning and Repairs NRG - Commissioning and Testing both LV and HV
QAL - Commissioning, Maintenance and ACB repairs
Boyne Smelters - ACB Repairs
Bert is so well regarded in the industry he is often called upon by sites that do not directly engage Nilsen and freely offers advice. Bert is a passionate advocate of advancing the skills required for his trade.
The business utilises Bert's skill set over Qld when he is not required in the Gladstone area.
Solaft Filtration Solutions
Safety Excellence Award
In early March 2020, NRG awarded SOLAFT Technical Services the contract to perform the Fabric Filter Bag Replacements for its Unit 2 outage due in June. The baghouse change-out requires replacing 8,500 filter bags under hazardous conditions that require PPE to be worn.
The project was scheduled to employ an additional 26 contractors from the Gladstone region and take place over three weeks. Shortly after the contract was awarded, the Australian and Queensland Government officials implemented a number of restrictions on work practices to minimise the risk of spreading the disease. This project was placed on hold, with no estimated date on when business would be able to resume as normal.
NRG was deemed an Essential Services, and as such was required to keep operating. Filter Bags that have reached their maximum operating life start to experience performance issues and at times catastrophic failure. These performance issues and failures cause an increase in emissions, and affects the load the coal-fired power station can operate at without breaching environmental regulatory requirements. NRG’s OH&S team placed a number of initiatives to combat the risk of spreading COVID-19, including social distancing, mandatory temperature testing for all individuals prior to entry to the site, as well as restricting all non-NRG employees from accessing the site. Working with the NRG project team and their OH&S team, SOLAFT Technical Services proposed supplying a COVID Safe Team to implement a number of initiatives that would allow the supervised off-site contractors to perform the much-needed change-out. The proposed initiatives included providing a full time cleaning crew, creating a dedicated isolated PPE room and requesting two additional demountable crib rooms.
The dedicated isolated PPE room was to allow for respirator face fitting for all crew members in a safe sanitised environment, whilst SOLAFT identified that insufficient space was provided in the existing crib room to maintain social distancing. The COVID cleaning team would supply 4 full time staff responsible for cleaning all areas and PPE.
NRG deemed the measures put in place dealt sufficiently with the risks and ordered the project to proceed as already contracted and with the proposed measures in place.
In addition to the two 6m x 4m demountable crib rooms, NRG supplied a large theatre room for inductions to ensure the social distance of 2m was maintained.
The project was completed, allowing NRG to resume operations. SOLAFT now provides the new COVID Safe service to its other customers, and in conjunction with NRG was able to adapt to the challenging environment and allow off-site contractors access to the site to complete the much needed work. “Putting these measures into place reduced the risk of disease spreading to an acceptable level, and following a risk assessment, allowed NRG to continue successfully with its planned maintenance outage”
McCosker Contracting
Innovator Award
We then engineered the base first principles from scratch, with our own designers and a lot of research and development.
The intent, which are not too far away from, is to have them totally autonomous and remote controlled.
The first of the amphibious, buoyant 15-tonne machines were chain driven, but all succeeding models have been propelled using McCosker’s custom, locally derived, hydraulic system. The concept came from a discussion with a client when we were repairing tailings dams and doing dam wall lifts to extend dam wall capacity, and wanted to give faming a go of the tailings. We weren’t actively looking for tailings faming, but we had to address it if we wanted to do the bulk earthworks and other jobs McCosker were performing at this time.
We spoke to suppliers who had history in tailings operations, and they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted, and didn’t have the same vision as us. So we thought we would invest in developing this concept.
The McCosker Technology and what we are doing is unique and it is new. Our machines are totally amphibious, they can float and go anywhere on tailings dams.
Theoretically you cannot bog them, which means you can go to places you could not when conventional machines. The machines technically squeeze the water out of the mud and compacts it at the same time, so the water comes out of the tailings and then it is compacted with other earthmoving plant.
By squeezing and compacting the tailings you increase the capacity and the life longevity of the dam, which is far more economically viable and longer lasting for the client.
Since concept and design of the first Scroller, McCosker have been doing a lot of research and development and improving each machine.
We have built them as the demand came, and the productivity gains of our Scrollers, compared to what some of the others have had in the past have been a significant increase.
They are up to three times faster and more productive than our competitors.
Xtreme Engineering
Beale Culture Award
The final draft of the RAP plan is currently with Reconciliations Australia awaiting approval.
Through the development of our RAP, our organisation has commenced a reconciliation framework that has laid the foundations of a range of initiatives. To ensure that our RAP reflects our commitment we engaged a local Indigenous Artist to design the front and back cover.
Number 8 within our RAP is to improve employment outcomes by increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island recruitment, retention and professional development.
During the COVID-19 stand-down on GLNG their apprentices were unable to work on Curtis Island.
We assisted Programmed and Santos by hosting Jordy Ghee and Blake Cowburn, first year Indigenous Apprentices, in our workshop until they were able to return to work on Curtis Island.
We have previously had the pleasure of being a Gold Sponsor of the Bylee Possum Indigenous Women’s Rugby League Team that competed in the Reconciliation Carnival.
The aim of this team was to empower women of all/ any culture, to not only find their strength and character through sport, but to also push and assist the greater reconciliation movement, and to celebrate all that is great about our country.
We were honoured not only to be able to assist in getting this team to their carnival, but also to play a small part in our local indigenous community.
Within our workforce we have numerous Indigenous Employees that we are very proud of.
However, this one employee (name can be provided with approval from said employee) commenced and completed his apprenticeship with Xtreme Engineering.
He moved away from the region, but has recently returned to our workforce as an Estimator/ Project Manager. He is currently working on completing his Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety, and Diploma of Project Management.
By formalising our RAP Program it will provide a formal framework for Xtreme Engineering to advance reconciliation both within and outside of our workforce.
This RAP provides us with a roadmap to begin our reconciliation journey.
Gladstone Engineering Alliance (GEA) was proud to present our annual Industry Awards as our community’s opportunity to celebrate the spirit of innovation, excellence and collaboration that was fostered within our highly competitive industry supply chain.
Thank you to our attendees for coming together at our Industry Awards Night for another year to support, celebrate and recognise the local businesses that play an integral role in our region’s supply chain.
